NVDPL Playground - Final Exercise

Congratulations to everyone who has completed all the exercises, and I encourage all those still working at them to persevere.

I'm still really enjoying reading your blogs and seeing your creative input. I know some have really enjoyed playing with some of the tools.. I think Flickr and LibraryThing are a couple of the favourites. I think over time we will be using more of these tools as part of our everyday routines as you will probably notice when our new website is up and running. It will be much more interactive and will contain RSS feeds and places for patron feedback. Exciting innovations are happening in the library field check out Bibliocommons which probably won't be too far into our future (or something like it). Libraries can be dynamic.

"This present moment used to be the unimaginable future"
(Stewart Brand)

We are we always learning something new, and are constantly reinterpreting what we thought we knew in new ways. What we learn today is tomorrow's history. I hope that these 24 “Things” will prove to be building blocks to continued learning.

Phishing

I hate Phishing! I have recently had several fraudulent email's supposedly from CIBC wishing for information to protect my account..(the fact I don't have a CIBC account seems irrelevant). These look very official- CIBC logo etc - but are scams. NEVER respond to email's from a banking agency unless you verify that it has been sent legitimately and never put account PIN's or other information online - no bank would ever ask for this unless it's on their own secure site. Here are some E-mail Fraud Examples

Hereford - my home town

Hereford Cathedral, located at Hereford in England, dates from 1079. Its most famous treasure is Mappa Mundi, a mediƦval map of the world dating from the 13th century. The Cathedral also has a wonderful chained library

Chained Library & Mappa Mundi

Old House, Hereford

Originally part of Butchers Row, and now a museum, this tudor building stands in the middle of Hereford.

I was here last week visiting "home". Some things never change I'm glad to say!

Podcasts

Have been looking at Podcasts in both podcastalley and podcastpickle. Listened to a few library Podcasts but the ones I found were pretty boring, so decided to add the BBC Radio NewsPod to my Blog and Google Reader as an RSS feed. At least I can keep up to date on some International News.

Bears in today's Sun

The Vancouver Sun
14 Jul 2008
Discovered that the Sun links a feed to a blog - they also have an RSS feed but it has to be to a RSS reader on your personal computer - it didn't like Google Reader on our work computers. Loved the picture of the bears this morning.

Desk Set

Just looking at the "Desk Set" social networking group.. didn't join as I don't fit the social networking profile - well not the "single" bit..

Desk Set's Details
Status: Single
Here for: Friends
Body type: 0cm
Zodiac Sign:

Education: Grad / professional school
Occupation: librarians, archivists, people who like books

Quick link to: Desk Set

But it's a good way to connect to people with the same interests working in the book world. Great for Networking...maybe something to think of as we set up our new Webpage - a link to an NVDPL Social Networking Group - would have to come up with a cool name for it.. any suggestions?

Advantages of Facebook

If your kids never communicate with you (unless they want something).. then a good way to keep track of their goings on is to see their latest postings on Facebook. My son Hale's latest posting is of him petting tigers in Thailand. Cute kitty!

Unique Lives

Maya Angelou
Tonight I went to hear Maya Angelou speak at the Orpheum. Quite a remarkable lady.

A Brave and Startling Truth
We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
Traveling through casual space
Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
To a destination where all signs tell us
It is possible and imperative that we learn
A brave and startling truth
And when we come to it
To the day of peacemaking
When we release our fingers
From fists of hostility
And allow the pure air to cool our palms
When we come to it
When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean
When battlefields and coliseum
No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
Up with the bruised and bloody grass
To lie in identical plots in foreign soil
When the rapacious storming of the churches
The screaming racket in the temples have ceased
When the pennants are waving gaily
When the banners of the world tremble
Stoutly in the good, clean breeze
When we come to it
When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders
And children dress their dolls in flags of truce
When land mines of death have been removed
And the aged can walk into evenings of peace
When religious ritual is not perfumed
By the incense of burning flesh
And childhood dreams are not kicked awake
By nightmares of abuse
When we come to it
Then we will confess that not the Pyramids
With their stones set in mysterious perfection
Nor the Gardens of Babylon
Hanging as eternal beauty
In our collective memory
Not the Grand Canyon Kindled into delicious color
By Western sunsets
Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe
Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji
Stretching to the Rising Sun
Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor,
Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores
These are not the only wonders of the world
When we come to it
We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe
Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger
Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace
We, this people on this mote of matter
In whose mouths abide cankerous words
Which challenge our very existence
Yet out of those same mouths
Come songs of such exquisite sweetness
That the heart falters in its labor
And the body is quieted into awe
We, this people, on this small and drifting planet
Whose hands can strike with such abandon
That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living
Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness
That the haughty neck is happy to bow
And the proud back is glad to bend
Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
We learn that we are neither devils nor divines
When we come to it
We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
Created on this earth, of this earth
Have the power to fashion for this earth
A climate where every man and every woman
Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
Without crippling fear
When we come to it
We must confess that we are the possible
We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world
That is when, and only when
We come to it.

This poem was written and delivered in honor of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

Technorati

Interesting that all I could find when looking for the tag NVDPL was this - when I know there are a lot more tags with that name out there!

Will have to refine my search methinks..

Del.icio.us

I have been using del.icio.us for some time using Askaway's del.icio.us site.
It's a fabulous information resource. The link to my list is:
http://del.icio.us/JacquiJC

I have added Askaway's site to my network, so everytime a librarian adds a new great site I have it on my list - how cool is that!

Del.icio.us (pronounced "delicious") is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. The site was founded by Joshua Schachter in late 2003 and acquired by Yahoo! in 2005. It has more than three million users and 100 million bookmarked URLs

Was having problems capturing an image to post on the blog . On the image you want to download click alt and press the Print Screen button (top row). Open Paint - under edit click paste. Once it's captured save it as a photo - which you can download...
